Rock removal project to begin next week on I-10 in Texas Canyon

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a project next week to remove boulders from the median and shoulders of Interstate 10 in Texas Canyon in Cochise County.

The $1.38 million safety project will entail mechanical removal of large rocks that pose a hazard to motorists who leave the interstate. No explosives will be used in the removal of the rocks.

Crews will be on site starting Monday (Feb. 29) to begin survey work and other preconstruction activities. Shoulder closures will be in effect during this work, but all travel lanes on I-10 will remain open, with speed reduced to 65 mph.

Work to remove rocks in the median is scheduled to begin in early March and will require left lane closures in both directions. Rock removal work will be done Mondays through Thursdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.During work hours, the posted speed limit through the two-mile project area (mileposts 318 to 320) will be reduced to 55 mph.

During non-work hours, all travel lanes will be open, but the posted speed limit will remain at 65 mph.

Work in the median is expected to last approximately one month, before crews begin working to remove boulders from first the eastbound lane, then the westbound lane. During work on the shoulders, the right lane of I-10 will be closed on the side of the highway where work is being done.

The project is expected to be complete in mid-July 2016.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
