Loop 101 resurfacing in East Valley requires series of weekend closures

Restrictions timed to start after Cactus League season ends

PHOENIX – Work to add a new layer of smooth rubberized asphalt on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) in the Scottsdale area will require a series of weekend freeway closures starting Friday night (April 1), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Drivers should plan ahead and consider alternate routes when sections of Loop 101 are closed, starting this weekend with southbound lanes between Thomas and McKellips roads from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (April 4). State Route 51 and Interstate 17 are possible north-south alternate freeway routes.

Other sections of Loop 101 between Shea Boulevard and Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) are scheduled to be closed on weekends through mid-June while crews add the new top layer of rubberized asphalt on the freeway.

In partnership with communities, ADOT scheduled the series of Loop 101 weekend closures to start after the conclusion of the Cactus League season.

Upcoming Loop 101 closures for new pavement resurfacing are scheduled as follows:

• Southbound Loop 101 closed between Thomas and McKellips roads from 10 p.m. Friday (April 1) to 5 a.m. Monday (April 4) for rubberized asphalt paving. Southbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Chaparral and Indian School roads also closed. Northbound Loop 101 narrowed to two lanes in the area Friday and Saturday nights (11 p.m. – 8 a.m.). DETOUR: Consider alternate routes. Traffic exiting southbound Loop 101 at Indian School or Thomas roads will be directed to southbound Hayden Road/McClintock Drive.

• Northbound Loop 101 closed between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Thomas Road from 10 p.m. Friday (April 8) to 5 a.m. Monday (April 11). Both Loop 202 ramps to northbound Loop 101 closed. Northbound Loop 101 on-ramp at Rio Salado Parkway closed. DETOUR: Consider alternate routes. Northbound Loop 101 traffic will be directed to Loop 202.

Loop 101 Improvement Project information is available at azdot.gov/Loop101. The paving schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or other factors, including available equipment and materials.

The work is part of the $73 million project to widen an 11-mile stretch of Loop 101 south of Shea Boulevard, where new lanes and other improvements are being added to the freeway. The project started in August 2014 and is set for completion by this fall.

A one-inch layer of rubberized asphalt is used on Phoenix-area freeways to provide a smooth, durable driving surface that helps limit noise from vehicle tires.
