Juniper Fire forces closure of segment of SR 288 in Gila County

A growing wildfire in the White Mountains will lead to the closure of a segment of State Route 288 startingWednesday (May 25).

The Arizona Department of Transportation and the U.S. Forest Service plan to close the highway to all traffic between the junction with State Route 188, which leads to Roosevelt Lake and the community of Young in Gila County.

The lightning-caused Juniper Fire, which has been burning in the area since May 17, is spreading toward a heavily wooded area of the Sierra Ancha Wilderness in the Tonto National Forest. The highway will be closed to allow for firefighting activities and because of the threat of flames and smoke in the area limiting visibility for motorists.

It is unknown how long the section of SR 288 will remain closed.
