Bell Road/US 60 Update: Grand Avenue traffic switch in place

Two-way traffic now sharing new westbound US 60 lanes in work zone

SURPRISE – Grand Avenue (US 60) traffic has been switched to newly constructed westbound lanes at Bell Road in the latest milestone for an Arizona Department of Transportation project connecting the roadways with an overpass and interchange.

Crews worked overnight this week to move Grand Avenue traffic from the eastbound side of the road to the new westbound lanes between Dysart and Litchfield roads. Two-way traffic on Grand will share the westbound lanes while work advances on the Bell Road overpass and on improved eastbound US 60 lanes.

Now that the traffic switch is in place, access in and out of shopping center parking lots along Grand Avenue will occur via Towne Center Drive and Bell Grande Drive. Driveways being added in that stretch will open upon completion of the new eastbound Grand Avenue lanes.

Work to construct the deck of the Bell Road overpass is underway. All of the 89 concrete girders that are part of the bridge are in place.

Eastbound Grand Avenue is scheduled to be closed between Litchfield and Dysart roads from 10 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2 and from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, for bridge work. Eastbound traffic will detour along Litchfield, Greenway and Dysart roads during the overnight closures.

The recently opened 134th Avenue connection north of Bell Road and west of Dysart Road is now an improved way for drivers to access businesses in that area.

Bell Road remains temporarily closed between Dysart and Litchfield roads to reduce the project’s length and lessen the overall impact of construction. Access to nearby businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

Bell Road is scheduled to reopen to traffic by November, while the entire interchange project is set for completion by spring 2017.

The primary detour routes while Bell Road is closed are Dysart, Greenway and Litchfield roads. Drivers should observe signs and speed limits. Law enforcement officers are patrolling the area.

US 60 (Grand Avenue) and Bell Road Weekly Project Update

Bell Road closed through November between 134th Drive and West Point Parkway.  Businesses in the area are open during construction and can be accessed beyond the “Road Closed – Local Traffic Only” signage.

Allow plenty of time and observe all traffic control signs and barricades. The project team appreciates your continued patience. If you have questions or concerns, please call the project hotline at (855) 712-8530 and press option #1 or send an email to bellandgrandinfo@azdot.gov.

Weekly Update #27—Week of August 1, 2016

Bell Road closure detour route is from Bell Road to Dysart to Greenway to Litchfield roads.

Current Activities

View the weekly construction photos and additional information on the project website.

Work continues Monday through Saturday to:

  • Eastbound Grand Avenue CLOSED nightly 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 1) and Tuesday (Aug. 2) for bridge work on the west side of Grand Avenue.
  • Existing eastbound Grand Avenue roadway pavement removed for reconstruction.
  • Construct the retaining wall panels of the bridge over Grand Avenue.
  • Continue to build the bridge deck over Grand Avenue.

**City, County, and State law enforcement will be patrolling the area. Please obey all traffic signage and posted speed limits.**

The Grand Avenue/Bell Road Interchange Project is using the design-build contracting method, which provides flexibility while the contractor’s designers work side-by-side with the construction team to deliver an improved connection between the two roadways. The project is scheduled to be completed over the next 14 months (in spring 2017).

In order to reduce the project’s length and lessen the overall impacts of construction, ADOT has worked with the city of Surprise and local businesses to schedule a full closure of Bell Road near Grand Avenue. The full closure will allow Bell Road to be reconstructed as an overpass traveling over Grand Avenue and the parallel railroad tracks, providing a significant improvement for traffic flow.

I-10 and Ina Road construction continues; Ina Road remains open through early 2017

The Interstate 10, Ina Road Traffic Interchange project in Marana, north of Tucson, continues its first phase of construction, anticipated to last through early 2017. Ina Road will remain open during this phase. In addition, major utility work will also begin and continue throughout this phase. The work is scheduled as follows:

Interstate 10

  • Eastbound I-10, between Cortaro and Ina roads, will be narrowed to one lane overnight beginning 8 p.m. Monday (Aug. 1) to 5 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 2) to set temporary concrete barrier.
    • The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Cortaro Road will be closed during this work.
    • All other ramps will remain open.
  • Westbound I-10, north of Ina Road will have an overnight lane closure beginning 8 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 4) through 5 a.m. Friday (Aug. 5) to set temporary concrete barrier.

    Interstate 10 Frontage Road
  • The westbound I-10 frontage road between Ina Road and Cortaro Road is closed around the clock through the end of the year for reconstruction to accommodate the traffic detour when Ina Road closes in early 2017.
  • The eastbound I-10 frontage road, north of Starcommerce Way, is reduced to one lane around the clock through the fall to accommodate construction of the new frontage road.
  • The eastbound I-10 frontage road, south of Starcommerce Way, to Ina Road may have intermittent lane restrictions daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the month of August for utility work.
  • Access to all businesses along the eastbound frontage road will be maintained.
  • Interstate 10 and all ramps remain open in both directions during the work.
  • Message boards and traffic control signs will guide drivers through the work zone.

    Ina Road
  • Ina Road is narrowed to one lane in each direction between the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Camino de la Cruz nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through early August to allow crews to remove and repave the center median islands to accommodate utility line work.
  • Ina Road will have left turn lane restrictions in both directions on Sunday (July 31) and Monday(Aug. 1) from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
  • Beginning Tuesday morning, Aug. 2, Ina Road will have left-turn lane restrictions in both directions around the clock from Camino de Oeste to Camino de la Cruz for approximately three months to accommodate daytime utility line work scheduled to begin in early August.

    Massingale Road
  • Massingale Road is closed around the clock at the westbound I-10 frontage road for the reconstruction of the frontage road.
  • Drivers may use Camino de Oeste as an alternate route.

    Starcommerce Way
  • Starcommerce Way at the eastbound I-10 frontage road is narrowed to one lane daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through late July for utility work.

The reconstruction project to fully reconstruct the interchange will improve traffic operations on I-10 and on the Ina Road traffic interchange. The project consists of widening I-10 to accommodate an additional lane in each direction and Ina Road from Silverbell Road to Camino de la Cruz.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned roadway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur due to weather or equipment issues.

Drivers are reminded to share the road, be cautious, and slow down while traveling through the work zone.

Managed by ADOT, this project is funded by the Regional Transportation Authority of Pima County. The voter-approved, $2.1 billion RTA plan will be implemented through 2026. Details about the full plan are available at www.RTAmobility.com.

TODAY IS

Rodney Allen Rippey, the formerly cute kid from the Jack in the Box commercials, turns 48 today. I believe that was in the pre-blow-up-the-clown phase.

Country singer Martina McBride turns 50 today.
I'm sure there's a country song in there somewhere.
There are a lot of wanna-be's out there, but usually they turn out to be more like a McBridesmaid, than a McBride.
Before she was successful, she was always a McBridesmaid and never a McBride.

Patti Scialfa -- Mrs. Bruce Springsteen -- was born in the USA 60 years ago today. In other words, Happy Birthday, Boss of the Boss.

Documentary film maker Ken Burns hits number 63 today. I believe he'll celebrate it in 7-parts.

Dr. David Reuben turns 83 today. He wrote the book, "Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask)." I always wondered what inspired him to write the book, but I was afraid to ask.

National Lasagna Day -- Did you know that the pasta you crave reveals your personality. Oh yeah, what you love to eat isn't solely determined by your taste buds. In fact, the kinds of foods you crave are directly related to what you want out of life. In particular the type of pasta you most like to sink your teeth into is a tell-tale indicator, says leading food expert Chef Joseph Bonanno.

Lasagna
You have a quick wit and high intelligence, and there is nothing you like better than a challenge. People in your circle look to you when they have a problem to solve. You possess superior organizational skills that you use to keep your household running smoothly while getting high marks from a demanding boss for your competence and expertise on the job.

Spaghetti and Meatballs
There's nothing you desire more than spending most your time with your family. Your job is important simply because it provides the money you need to support your loved ones. They are the center of your universe, and the strong bonds you have with your family give you the self-confidence you need to meet any challenge.

Fettuccine Alfredo
You appreciate the finer things in life, and you're willing to work hard to get them. A veteran shopper, you manage to find the most amazing bargains, and both friends and family appreciate your generosity -- you have the best taste in gifts. You also have the ability to stick to a strict budget in order to save enough cash for that special indulgence.

Macaroni and Cheese
You've never lost the wide-eyed wonder you had as a child. You thoroughly enjoy life with an infectious gusto that draws people to your side. Having fun is your top priority, and you are usually in charge of group outings and parties. Your upbeat, positive approach to life is a source of inspiration to others.

Pasta Primavera
You strive to live the healthiest life possible, and you are raising your kids in your image by making sure they eat a healthful diet and get plenty of exercise. You bring the same zest to other aspects of your life, never losing sight of your goals. You're known for your tenacity and both your family and pals often turn to you when things get rough.
