ON THIS DAY

On this date in 410 A.D., Rome was overrun by the Visigoths, which symbolized the fall of the Western Roman Empire. They were tired of having to add A.D. after the year and they must have won. It also explains why Romans aren't very fond of Goths.

In 1775, England's King George publicly labeled the American colonists "rebels." After a week, the colonists grew tired of the labels and took them off.

On this date in 1812, the British invaded the U.S. and set fire to the capitol building and the White House! Congress, thinking quickly, came up with a fire tax and smothered the fire immediately.

The Waffle Iron is patented way back in 1869, invented by Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York -- a morning pancake that held it's own syrup. Finally, we could enjoy waffles without wrinkles.

On this date in 1954, the Communist party was banned in the United States. Of course, it eventually was allowed to return, along with the Purse Party and the "Fun with Stamping" party.

In 1995, Microsoft began selling Windows 95. It was going to solve all of our problems, especially those of us who had never seen a 'blue screen of death' before.
