Night work at I-19 traffic interchange at Ajo Way scheduled this week

Motorists passing through the area of Interstate 19 and Ajo Way will encounter nighttime restrictions this week as the Arizona Department of Transportation continues work to replace the traffic interchange on Tucson’s southwest side.

The following restrictions are scheduled for this week:

The southbound I-19 off-ramp at Irvington Road and the right lane of southbound I-19 approaching the ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, to 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, for removal of temporary concrete barrier.
  • The left lane of northbound I-19 will be closed between Ajo Way (State Route 86) and Interstate 10 from 9 p.m.Thursday, Dec. 1, to 5 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, for installation of temporary concrete barrier.
  • Alternating lane closures will be in effect on northbound I-19 from Ajo Way to I-10 from 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, to 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 6, for highway striping and shifting northbound I-19 traffic onto a temporary detour.
  • The southbound I-19 off-ramp at Irvington Road will be closed from 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, for striping of the ramp.

The work is part of a $40 million project to replace the existing traffic interchange at I-19 and Ajo Way with a modern single-point urban interchange that will provide more efficient and safer movement of traffic at the heavily used interchange.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.
