ON THIS DAY

On this date back in 1801, The U.S. House of Representatives broke an electoral tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, electing Jefferson president and Burr vice president. That's how it worked. Ever since then, the vice-president has always been a Burr in the president's side.
In 1817, a street in Baltimore became the first to be lighted with gas. It was the unfortunate combination of cigars and Burrito Night.
On this date in 1876, sardines were canned for the very first time in Eastport, Maine.
  • Several had been getting pickled on the job.

  • It wasn't the first time they had been napping on the job.

In 1897, the forerunner of the National PTA, the National Congress of Mothers was established in Washington, DC. These days, it's the PTSA... but congress is mostly made up of mothers.
On this date in 1929, the very first in-flight movie was shown in an airplane.

  • Unfortunately, the movie they were showing was "Crash of Flight 517."
  • Sadly, headphones weren't invented for another 20 years.
  • It probably shouldn't have been "The Hindenburg" but they were learning.
