ON THIS DAY

On this day in 1794, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin... which, of course, paved the way for the cotton gin martini.

On this date in 1903, the very first national bird reservation was made in Florida. I wonder why they don't let you reserve birds anymore?

In 1923, President Warren Harding became the first U.S. president to file an income tax return. That was back in the days when presidents released their tax returns. I say we go after all those deadbeat presidents before him. Who's with me?

On this date in 1964, a jury in Dallas found Jack Ruby guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy. Having committed the crime on national TV made the jury's job pretty easy.

In 1968, the last episode of the TV show, "Batman" aired. Holy cancelation!

On this date in 1972, Burt Reynolds became the first nude male centerfold. They had to be really careful where they put the staples in that issue.

In 1986, Robert McDonald set the world record for going without sleep at 453 hours, 40 minutes -- that's 19 days! Robert's final words before going to sleep: "That's it! I'm switching to decaf!" Starbucks stock went up 20% during that stretch.
