Plan ahead for weekend closure of northbound Interstate 17 between McDowell and Camelback roads

Drivers should consider alternate routes

The Arizona Department of Transportation is continuing work on a major project to add a new layer of smooth rubberized asphalt to Interstate 17 in Phoenix. The resurfacing is being accomplished through a series of weekend closures in areas between Dunlap Avenue in north Phoenix and 19th Avenue southwest of the downtown area. Drivers are asked to plan ahead for this weekend’s closure and consider alternate routes to avoid anticipated traffic delays.

Northbound I-17 will be closed between McDowell and Camelback roads from 10 p.m. Friday, April 28, to 5 a.m.Monday, May 1. Drivers should consider using westbound Interstate 10 as an alternate route in the downtown Phoenix area. Drivers should also consider using 19th Avenue and 27th Avenue as alternate routes.

Closures and restrictions include:
Both ramps at I-10 connecting to northbound I-17 will be closed. The northbound I-17 ramps to I-10 at the “Stack” will be open, but expect heavy traffic.
The southbound I-17 HOV lane will be closed between Camelback and Thomas roads for fence replacement work.
Eastbound Thomas Road will be closed at I-17 for fence replacement work.
On Thomas and Indian School roads, no left turns will be allowed because of fence replacement work.
The southbound I-17 off-ramp at Indian School Road also will be closed for fence replacement.
Indian School Road will be narrowed to one lane in both directions at I-17 as crews work on fence replacement at the interchange.

DETOUR: Consider alternate routes including westbound I-10 starting near Sky Harbor Airport to northbound SR 51 and the westbound Loop 101 to reach I-17. Expect heavy traffic on the local detour routes. Northbound I-17 traffic exiting at McDowell Road will detour along the frontage road. Consider using Glendale and Northern Avenues as alternate east-west routes this weekend.

Drivers should use caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment in work zones. No restrictions or closures will be scheduled over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in May.
