ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1775, Benjamin Franklin became the first Postmaster General.
  • He'd actually been appointed that several months earlier, but it took that long for the letter to reach him.
  • He didn't really pay that much attention to his job. Some say he just mailed it in.
  • It became a passion project for him and he was very much into mail enhancement.
  • Ironically, when he was first asked, he told them to go fly a kite.

In 1788, New York became the 11th state to ratify the U.S. constitution. The popular slogan at the time was, "Ratify this!"

On this date in 1952, Argentina's first lady, Eva Peron died in Buenos Aires at the age of only 33. I doubt anyone said at the time, "You know, someday this will be a great musical"... but it did.

In 1968, London Records halted plans to release the Rolling Stones' "Beggars Banquet" album because of its "obscene" toilet stall cover. How far we've come...

On this date in 1969 the bed-pushing record was set at 3233 miles. Needless to say, when the person in the bed woke up, was he surprised. Best prank ever!

In 1980, Joe Bowen set the world record for walking on stilts: 3,008 miles. Of course, the crocodile that chased him the entire way deserves part of the credit.

TODAY IS

Kate Beckinsale hits 44 today. And she thought the movie "Haunted" was scary. Trying being an actress and 44 in Hollywood.

Sandra Bullock turns 53 today. She feels the need for Speed... 3! Her career has been a lot like being on a bus with Keanu Reeves... you just don't know if it's ever going to stop or if it'll blow up. Kevin Spacey turns 58 today. He can act his age or any age, for that matter... As an actor, Spacey's very intense. Even when he goes camping, he's in tents.

Helen Mirren is 72. Google "Young Helen Mirren" and she was quite the stunner in her day.

Mick Jagger is 74. He still has over 800 years left on his deal with the devil. So much for that "they don't gather moss." Have you seen the north side of Mick lately?
