if you're looking for more legroom when you fly, book your next flight on jetBlue. Surprised? Discount airline jetBlue actually has the most legroom of all U.S. airlines. Known in the industry as "pitch," it means the distance between two rows. Lifehacker.com did the hard work, checking the pitches and seat widths for the big airlines and made a list of the best. There are only four airlines that are thinking of your derriere and your cramped legs, but if you have a choice when you book your flight, choose one of these for the greatest comfort. Just for comparison, the average pitch was 35 inches in the 1970s and is now about 31 inches. The average seat width was 18 inches in the '70s and is now 16.5 inches. The top four airlines with the biggest seats and the most legroom:

1. jetBlue
Seat width: 17.8 to 18.5 inches. Pitch: 32 to 35 inches on most flights and some planes are between 37 and 41 inches.

2. Virgin America
Seat width: 18.7 inches. Pitch: 32 to 38 inches, depending on the aircraft.

3. Hawaiian Airlines (Airbus A330 planes)
Seat width: 18 inches. Pitch: 32 inches.

4. American Airlines Economy
Seat width: 17 to 18.25 inches. Pitch: 30 to 37 inches.

Bonus: When the person in front of you reclines, the bottom of that seat slides forward -- giving you more legroom.
