I-19 to close at Ajo Way this weekend Ajo Way also closing in work zone

TUCSON ‒ Interstate 19 will close in both directions this weekend at Ajo Way (State Route 86) to allow Arizona Department of Transportation crews to set girders on the new Ajo Way bridge.

From 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, to 5 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, drivers will exit I-19 at the Ajo off-ramps, cross Ajo and return to I-19 at the Ajo on-ramps. I-19 traffic will not be able to exit at Ajo; drivers will leave I-19, slow down, cross Ajo and return to the freeway.

The ramp connecting westbound I-10 to southbound I-19 also will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

At the same time, Ajo Way will be closed between 16th Avenue and Holiday Isle. Drivers may want to consider Irvington as an alternate route.

The work is part of a two-year project to improve the traffic inter change at Ajo Way. Work began in March 2016 and is on schedule to be completed in early 2018.
