ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1767, the Mason-Dixon Line was created... which lead to the invention the following week of Mason-Dixon Line Dancing.

On this date in 1842, Samuel Morse laid the first telegraph cable in New York Harbor. The first message sent was to his very dear friend: "Mr. Watson, I've been mugged!"

In 1867, the U.S. took formal possession of Alaska from Russia. We bought it for $7.2 million, plus tip. The deal cost $7.2 million, which included the land and an unlimited supply of ice and was handled by Century 19 Real Estate.

On this date in 1870, the sand-blasting machine is patented, enabling bullies everywhere to do more than just kick sand in your face.
  • Before then, people had a blast but didn't know what to call it.
  • Which made covering people's towels at the beach even easier.
  • If you ever wanted to feel like you were at the beach during a windstorm, it was now possible.
  • The machine was patented by a 90-pound weakling who was tired of bullies kicking sand in his face.
  • Before that, people had to destroy their sand castles by hand.

In 1922, the BBC began in England. Without it, American television would never have had the ideas to steal for most of our shows.

Thomas Edison died on this date in 1931. The light bulb finally burned out. On this date in 1715, Peter II of Russia entered the world. Yep, it was on this day, a czar was born!

On this date in 1953, Willie Thrower became the first African American NFL quarterback, much to the relief of the his receiver, Willie Catchit.

In 1967, the "Jungle Book" hit movie theaters, featuring the adventures of a bear named "Baloo." The movie featured such songs as "Counting Baloo Cars," "Suite Judy Baloo Eyes" and "Baloo Hawaii."

TODAY IS

Two months from today, we'll be exactly a week away from Christmas. Just sayin'...

Bristol Palin turns 27 today. Basically, she's a conservative Kardashian.

Rapper Nonchalant turns 47 today. She's unconcerned and planning a low-key party and not to get very excited.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is facing his 57th birthday today. Get out of that one, tough guy!

Pam Dawber of the old "Mork and Mindy" show turns 66 today. But that's old nanu-nanu's. I'm sure working with Robin Williams all those years aged her the most.

Singer Joe Egan turns 71 today. He was the non-Gerry Rafferty half of the group, Stealer's Wheel who sang "Stuck in the Middle With You."

Dawn Wells, Maryann from Gilligan's Island, is 79 years old. Wow. She spent three years stranded on "Gilligan's Island" and then the next 30 years stuck in TBS reruns.

The voice of college football, Keith Jackson, turns 89 today. Whoa Nellie!
