ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1719 Thomas Fleet of Boston, MA, published his mother-in-law's tales in the book, "Mother Goose."

In 1787, New Jersey became our third state. The day before, their legislators, deciding whether to remain a British colony or not, officially decided to "forget about it." Interesting that New Jersey became a state on this date, as New Jersey and Ray Liotta have the same birthday.

On this date in 1813 the British took Fort Niagara during the War of 1812. Of course, the headline said, "Niagra Falls." Who could resist that one?

In 1849, a photo of the moon was taken through a telescope for the very first time.
  • And all this time I thought he was just a spy.
  • The guy doing the mooning was arrested.
  • What some guys won't do for a cheap Christmas gift.

On this date in 1915, President Woodrow Wilson was married, a year after his wife had died while he was president. He was not only a two-term president, but also our only two first lady president!

In 1932, the Chicago Bears beat the Portsmouth Spartans, 9-0, in the first NFL playoff game.
  • The Bears could have used a few Portsmouth Spartans in their schedule this year.
  • It was one of the lowest-rated TV games ever, mostly because TV had not been invented yet.
  • There was quite a half-time scandal, when the featured singer flashed her ankle to the crowd.
  • The game was sponsored by Sarsaparilla Light.
  • Hard to imagine the playoff games starting in mid-December.

On this date in 1957, the movie "Bridge Over The River Kwai" premiered in New York City. That movie still makes me Kwai.

In 1971, Jerry Lee Lewis and his wife Myra, whom he had married when she was 13, got a divorce. Apparently, they had a fight because she wanted to go back and finish junior high school.

On this date in 1972, the U.S. began the "Christmas bombing" of North Vietnam. The toughest part was being really careful while wrapping the bombs.

TODAY IS

One week to go.

Christina Aguilera celebrates birthday number 37 today. Not sure if she could still fit into those Mouseketeer ears. She needs that Genie in the Bottle a little bit more each year.

Katie Holmes turns 39 today. She showed us that all it takes to be successful in Hollywood is work hard, believe in your abilities and have Tom Cruise's baby. This year, she's looking forward to a Christmas where she doesn't have to wear a foil hat and is 100% Tom Cruise free.

Rap singer DMX turns 47 today. Maybe some year, someone will buy him a vowel for his name.

Wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin hits 53 today. He's going to spend a quiet night at home, body slamming a cake.

Brad Pitt is 54. I know it wouldn't matter, but we thought we'd tell you anyway.

Ray Liotta turns 63 today. Born in Newark, New Jersey, not surprising. To me, he's got scary eyes. Put him in a Santa outfit and I'd switch to Kwanza.

It's Bake Cookies Day!
