ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1770 John Bartram of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received the very first shipment of rhubarb sent to America from Benjamin Franklin in London. Up until then, when baseball players argued with an umpire, it was just called a fight.

It was on this date in 1787 that William Herschel discovered the 2 moons of Uranus. Being a family show, we'll stop there.

In 1805, the Michigan Territory was created. Now, the only thing left to do was to figure out which part would be Wolverine and which Spartan.

On this date in 1861, Alabama became the 4th state to secede from the Union. Yeah, it was one of those rare instances when they weren't number one.

Milk is delivered in bottles for the first time in 1878 -- Bit: Via a preliminary, participants win/earn "udders" (actually latex gloves) filled with different color milk. They, in turn, "milk" it of its contents. The color of the milk determines the kind of prize they win.

On this date in 1935, Aviator Amelia Earhart took off from Hawaii on the first solo flight ever by woman across the Pacific Ocean. Upon landing, someone said, "Uh, aren't you Hillary Swank?"

In 1942, Japan declared war on the Netherlands, who said that was fine, as long as they went Dutch.

On this date in 1949, three inches of snow fell in Los Angeles.
  • It was also the first time anyone saw frozen smog.
  • If you thought they couldn't drive in rain, imagine what snow did to the commute.
  • All the "It'll be a cold day in hell" things happened that day.
  • Kids immediately went outside and built a smog man. Needless to say, everyone had to take extra blankets to the beach that day.

TODAY IS

The Rosenkowitz sextuplets, the first known to have survived infancy, turn 44 today. Or, collectively, 264.

Amanda Peet turns 46 today. You should celebrate, for Peet's sake.

Mary J. Blige celebrates birthday number 47 today, for the record.

Guitarist Tom Dumont is 50. He is/was with "No Doubt," which ironically, we never know if they're splitting or getting back together.

Jason Connery, yes Sean's son, turns 55 today. That scraping sound you hear is the bottom of our birthday barrel.

Ben Crenshaw turns 66 today. That's the former professional golfer, not the presidential candidate. Naomi Judd, the mama, turns 72 today. She was once one half of The Judds. Naomi is now both halves. She gave us Ashley Judd, for whom we shall forever be grateful.
