ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1521, Martin Luther was excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church. I'm no religious history expert, but I believe it was for taking a knee during the sermon.

In 1871, Henry W. Bradley received a patent for oleomargarine. He originally wanted to call it, "I can't believe I didn't invent butter."

On this date in 1888, the very first drinking straw was patented. Sucking on an empty soda with a straw was all you could do to annoy people in a movie theater until the cell phone was invented.
  • Until that day, nobody but you knew when you had reached the end of your soda.
  • To think, the world existed all those years without the end of the soft drink slurping noise.
  • If you didn't use it for drinking, makes you wonder what they used it for before?
  • It proved much easier to use than the eating straw.

In 1943, the very first missing persons report was broadcast in New York City. Hard to believe people didn't disappear until 1943.

On this date in 1957, the first electric wristwatch was patented. Finally, a time piece that you didn't have to wind that could go with you as far as the extension cord reached.

TODAY IS

Eli Manning turns 37 today. Still a New York Giant, as of a few minutes ago.

Danica McKellar, who played Winnie on "The Wonder Years" is now 43 years old. No more wondering needed... "The Wonder Years" was a TV show in the 90's based on what it was like to grow up in the 1960s. What's sad is that many of you don't remember either one.

John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin turns 72 today. One of his most famous quotes these days is, "What?"

Mel Gibson turns 62 today. We'll let you tell him. Remember back when he first started in the "Lethal Weapon" movies and he played a crazy, loose cannon... and we thought he was acting?

Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, turns 73 today. Ironically, Stills is actually younger than Young.
