ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1794 Sylvester Graham was born. He developed the Graham Cracker. Did you know that the food granola was originally called "granula" and was made of smashed-up rebaked Graham Crackers.

In 1811, Venezuela became the first South American country to declare its independence from Spain. Pretty brave thing to do when you're 4,000 miles away.

On this date in 1865, William Booth established the Salvation Army in London. If their name doesn't sound familiar, by the holiday season, it will ring a bell.

In 1946, the bikini made its debut at a fashion show in Paris, France.
It happened just as someone was reciting, "I see London, I see France, I see... WHOA!"
And somehow this isn't a national holiday.
God bless those pioneers who helped popularize it. However, the critics weren't kind. Reviews ranged from "Why even bother?" to "I've got hankies bigger than that!"
The first thing anyone said: "Uh, you forgot something!"

On this date in 1947 Larry Doby signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first black player in baseball's American League. Yes, ironically, the American League team that could first say they weren't racist: the Cleveland Indians.

In 1971, the voting age was lowered to 18 (so we could share the blame) thanks to the 26th amendment. Or was it raised to 26 because of the 18th amendment? Well, one of those two things. Actually, the change in the law gave millions more Americans the opportunity to not vote but still whine about everything.

TODAY IS

OK, so the 4th is over. But at least two more big days this month: July 17th is "7-11 Day" with free Slurpees. And July 16th begins Amazon Prime Day and all the specials that go along with it.

Happy Cinco de July-O.

Women's soccer player Megan Rapinoe celebrates her 33rd birthday today. She likes to put out her birthday candles with a kick.

Rap singer Bizarre turns 42 today. That's weird. Oh, no, wait -- he's a different guy.

Edie Falco from the Sopranos and Nurse Jackie turns 55 today.
One thing about being on a TV series with her -- you never had job security. (Your character would always be just one episode away from demise.)
She went from a show where people got whacked, to being a whack job herself!

Former Yankees pitcher "Goose" Gossage turns 67 today. Never ask him how he got his nickname. No, really, don't.

Huey Lewis turns 68 today.
He's still with "The news"... it's just that, these days, it's in larger font. Otherwise, the news is old.
That's the news, sports and weather next.

President Nixon's daughter, Julie Nixon Eisenhower turns the big 7-0 today. She married the grandson of President Eisenhower. Very early in her marriage, she made that famous speech to her husband, where she said, "I'm not a cook!"

Workaholics Day -- A day for workaholics to plan out some fun. A recent UCLA study found that true happiness comes from spending less time crunching numbers at the office and more time hugging family and friends. Why? Money can't buy lasting happiness. The more you make, the more you spend and the more you need.
