Reminder: US 60 pavement project in Salt River Canyon starts Wednesday Salt River Canyon Rest Area to close for two weeks during the work

PHOENIX – A reminder for travelers heading to and from the White Mountains: The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin a pavement improvement project along US 60 through the Salt River Canyon east of Globe on Wednesday, July 12.

With this work underway, the Salt River Canyon Rest Area at milepost 292.8 on US 60 will close on Tuesday, July 11, and reopen Monday, July 24. Minor maintenance will be performed while the rest area is closed.

During the project, US 60 will be narrowed to one lane in areas between mileposts 286 and 302 from approximately 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Flag crews will direct traffic one direction at a time through the work zone. Drivers should allow at least 30 extra minutes of travel time during these hours.

The $1.4 million project is scheduled for completion by this fall.

More information on the US 60 paving project is available at azdot.gov/US60ChipSeal.

Another project affecting travel to and from the White Mountains is scheduled to begin Tuesday, July 11, on State Route 87 north of Sunflower in the Slate Creek area, between mileposts 223 and 226. Drivers using this route should budget extra time with the highway narrowed to one lane in each direction until the fall. More information on this project is available at azdot.gov/SR87Improvement.
