State Route 288 to close overnight Friday due to wildfire; closure may last until 7 a.m. Saturday

State Route 288 between Roosevelt Lake and the remote Gila County community of Young will be closed between mileposts 280 and 295 from 7 p.m. Friday until at leastmidnight and perhaps as late as 7 a.m. Saturday due to the Juniper Fire. When the road will reopen depends on whether smoke has cleared enough for good visibility.  An Arizona Department of Transportation pilot car has been guiding traffic through this stretch one direction at a time, with delays of up to 30 minutes.
