Image
Two-way traffic now sharing new westbound US 60 lanes in work zone SURPRISE – Grand Avenue (US 60) traffic has been switched to newly constructed westbound lanes at Bell Road in the latest milestone for an Arizona Department of Transportation project connecting the roadways with an overpass and interchange. Two-way traffic on Grand will share the westbound lanes while work advances on the Bell Road overpass and on improved eastbound US 60 lanes. Now that the traffic switch is in place, access in and out of shopping center parking lots along Grand Avenue will occur via Towne Center Drive and Bell Grande Drive. Driveways being added in that stretch will open upon completion of the new eastbound Grand Avenue lanes. Work to construct the deck of the Bell Road overpass is underway. All of the 89 concrete ...

Other Thoughts....

Dr. Neil Clark Warren is stepping down as CEO and spokesman for dating site eHarmony.com. He had been planning to do that for a while but, ironically, had trouble coming up with a date. Two new species of scorpions have been found in Arizona. Most likely, in a shoe. Verizon has purchased Yahoo and plans to merge it with AOL, which would make Yahooaol, right? Sounds like a character on Star Trek. So, if Hillary Clinton becomes president, what do we call her husband? First Man? I doubt that. First Gentlemen? We know that's not true. Seth Myers had a funny line: "Booing is just how people exhale in Philadelphia." President Obama passed the baton to Hillary Clinton this week. Well, he called it a baton, Bill called it a weapon. They've found a 1964 Rice Krispies TV commercial, with a theme song done by the Rolling Stones. Ironically, all these years later, it's the band that makes the snap, crackle and pop sounds, just sitting there.

2016's Best & Worst Cities for Renters

With family moving season historically peaking in July and the share of U.S. renter households increasing in 2015 to more than 36 percent -- the highest since the 1960s -- WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016's Best & Worst Cities for Renters. To help prospective renters get the most bang for their buck, WalletHub's analysts compared the 150 largest cities based on their rental attractiveness and quality of life. Best Cities for Renters 1. Scottsdale, AZ 2. Overland Park, KS 3. Chandler, AZ 4. Tempe, AZ 5. Gilbert, AZ 6. Plano, TX 7. Las Vegas, NV 8. Peoria, AZ 9. Phoenix, AZ 10. Tampa, FL Worst Cities for Renters 141. Los Angeles, CA 142. Moreno Valley, CA 143. Baltimore, MD 144. Buffalo, NY 145. Santa Ana, CA 146. Philadelphia, PA 147. Detroit, MI 148. New York, NY 149. Hialeah, FL 150. Oakland, CA Best vs. Worst Gilbert, AZ, has the highest rental-affordability index, 89.15, which is four times higher than in Hialeah, FL, the city with the l...

DID YOU KNOW?

18% of people said this is the most annoying sound ever. What is it? Clearing throat. In a recent survey, 42% of teenagers claim they can text while blindfolded. Recent research shows in order to keep the peace, almost half of parents will let their kids eat an unhealthy breakfast. A study shows only 11% of us go grocery shopping on Wednesdays. If you're average, you'll spend about two weeks of your lifetime kissing. 15 days, to be exact.

TODAY'S IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION

The shark has the greatest "what" of any animal? Electrical sensitivity.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Tim Tebow won't call himself 'retired', hopes to coach some day and also, might eventually wander into politics. Honey Boo Boo mom, Mama June, has lost 150 pounds and is still going. A study says a loss of the ability to smell may indicate the onset of Alzheimer's Disease. Pat Upton, the lead singer and guitarist for Spiral Staircase, has died at age 75. Sesame Street, the 46-year-old award-winning children's show, cut three of its most senior cast members earlier this year, Bob McGrath AKA "Bob," Emilio Delgado (who played "Luis") and Roscoe Orman ("Gordon") were all released from the show as part of its re-tooling for HBO. And now there's a new app out there that lets you check out the male to female ratio at a bar before you go in. The Nigerian central bank has hiked its interest rate to 14%. Roger Federer has pulled out of the Rio Olympics as well as the rest of the season with a knee injury. Brett Favre's wife Dean...

TODAY IS

Rodney Allen Rippey, the formerly cute kid from the Jack in the Box commercials, turns 48 today. I believe that was in the pre-blow-up-the-clown phase. Country singer Martina McBride turns 50 today. I'm sure there's a country song in there somewhere. There are a lot of wanna-be's out there, but usually they turn out to be more like a McBridesmaid, than a McBride. Before she was successful, she was always a McBridesmaid and never a McBride. Patti Scialfa -- Mrs. Bruce Springsteen -- was born in the USA 60 years ago today. In other words, Happy Birthday, Boss of the Boss. Documentary film maker Ken Burns hits number 63 today. I believe he'll celebrate it in 7-parts. Dr. David Reuben turns 83 today. He wrote the book, "Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask)." I always wondered what inspired him to write the book, but I was afraid to ask. National Lasagna Day -- Did you know that the pasta you crave reveals your personality. O...

ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1030, the patron saint of Norway, King Olaf II, was killed in battle. He told one too many Ole and Lena joke and the troops just couldn't take it any more... In 1492 that the very first almanac was printed and all things considered, it's in pretty good shape, although I should probably break down and buy a new one. On this date in 1588, the English soundly defeated the Spanish Armada in the Battle of Gravelines. The battle began when the English asked "What's an Armada?" and the Spanish replied, "Nothing. What's an Armada with you?" In 1858, the first commercial treaty between the U.S. and Japan was signed. Which was weird, since commercials hadn't been invented yet. On this date in 1899 that the very first motorcycle race was held in Manhattan Beach, New York. It would have been so much more exciting had there been two motorcycles. It was also that day that they realized speed bumps do not make a good finish line. In 1914, transc...
