New system allows qualified trucks to bypass some ADOT ports of entry Sensors check weight, credentials at California, New Mexico, Utah lines

PHOENIX ‒ To help interstate commerce flow more efficiently while promoting safety, the Arizona Department of Transportation is adding a system that automatically checks the weight and registration of qualified commercial trucks without requiring them to stop as they enter the state. “Using cutting-edge technology allows us to enforce safety requirements on trucks that enter Arizona while letting trucks that comply with our rules to continue on their way,” said Tim Lane, director of ADOT’s Enforcement and Compliance Division, which operates commercial ports of entry. “We’re eliminating friction that can be costly for both the trucking companies and the state of Arizona.” The Drivewyze Preclear technology, similar to a system in place since 2015 near three ADOT interstate highway rest areas, uses geofencing technology and sensors embedded in the roadway to identify and check the weight, credentials and safety status of trucks that subscribe to the service as they approach seven Arizona

The War On Cars

(Men's Health) Flashing lights in the rearview? Squeak by without logging any points: Start off right Pull over as soon as you see the officer's lights. Turn on your interior light if it is dark out, and have your license and insurance card ready. This will put him in a good mood. Do not hem and haw Officers are lied to so often that it is refreshing when someone just fesses up. Acknowledge where you erred and promise you will be safer. Throw in an apology as well. Cop a plea Now that you have proved your sincerity, ask for a break: "I earned that citation, but would you mind issuing me a warning instead? It will not happen again." Being direct may work. Win in court If you do get a ticket, consider lawyering up. A good attorney can turn a 6-point "30 mph over" ticket into a 4-point "unsafe lane change" ticket and you will not have to go to court.

Landmark Medical Case Settled for $440K It's being called a landmark settlement. A child who as an infant underwent surgery aimed at assigning his gender as female but who now identifies as male will get a $270,000 pay out from the Medical University of South Carolina and the state's social services department. The money will buy an annuity policy that will eventually result in a $440,000 payout to the child - identified only as MC - who is now 12. Pam and Mark Crawford had waged a four-year legal battle against the hospital after MC, born with male and female genitalia, had his male parts removed when he was just a year old. The surgery, which took place when MC was in state custody, was not only unnecessary but meant MC's gender was decided for him. MUSC "denied all claims of negligence and any liability for the alleged claims" in the settlement. An estimated one in 2,000 babies born are intersex, with genitals not clearly male or female, and many undergo surg
