KEEPING SECRETS

Family Circle magazine talked to Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes about smart ways to help your Tweens and Teens navigate the real world. Wiseman says because your daughter won't always tell you what's going on. She found a group of girls, 40 girls, in fact, who will. While advising her on updating her book, they explained the top reasons girls keep their parents in the dark about problems they're having. Here's some of what she found:

Conflict Avoidance
She doesn't want you to get angry with the person she's having drama with because then you won't let her hang out with that person anymore. Or she'll have to hide it from you when she does.

Self-Preservation
Your daughter doesn't want you to think she has bad judgment or hear the list of reasons why you think she has bad judgment.

Attachment Issues
She doesn't want you to take away her technology, assuming the problem involves social media and it often does.

Independence
She wants to feel that she can handle things on her own, and she really doesn't want you to freak out and start calling or emailing people. Now that would be a problem.
