US 191 closure in Safford scheduled March 18-21 for rail crossing work
An Arizona Eastern Railway crossing improvement project will require the Arizona Department of Transportation to close US 191 in the city of Safford from the evening of Friday (March 18) through the morning of Monday (March 21).
US 191 will be closed at 8th Street in Safford from 7 p.m. on Friday (March 18) until 5 a.m. on Monday (March 21). During the closure, US 191 traffic will be detoured onto Graham County roads and Safford streets while crews work to improve the crossing. Message boards with detour information will be in use several days prior to the closure and throughout the weekend.
Motorists traveling east of the junction of US 191 and US 70 will use Old Solomon Road or Barney Lane, while those traveling west of the intersection will use Discovery Park Boulevard or 20th Avenue.
Improvements at the crossing will provide a smoother ride for vehicles and updated crossing signals.
While the closure is in place, the city of Safford will install new water lines at US 191 and 16th Street on Saturday (March 19) and Sunday (March 20). One lane of US 191 will remain open to through traffic during the daytime work and flagging personnel will direct traffic through the restricted area.
