SURPRISE – With concrete paving underway, sidewalks almost complete and paint going on, a bridge that will carry Bell Road over Grand Avenue (US 60) is nearly ready for traffic.
Bell Road is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, Nov. 22, in time for the start of the holiday shopping season, though unforeseen circumstances such as extreme weather can affect construction timelines.
The rest of the $41.9 million Arizona Department of Transportation project creating a modern traffic interchange is moving toward completion, as scheduled, by the start of baseball spring training. That work is primarily completing ramps connecting Bell Road with Grand Avenue and completing lanes that will carry eastbound Grand Avenue traffic.
Painting the Bell Road bridge will require closing Grand Avenue in both directions between Dysart and Litchfield roads from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Traffic will detour at Dysart and Litchfield roads.
Other work scheduled for the coming week includes continuing to build median ramps from Grand Avenue to Bell Road and new eastbound lanes for Grand Avenue, and installing barriers and lighting on the bridge.
For now, Bell Road remains closed between 134th Avenue and West Point Parkway to reduce the project’s length and lessen the overall impact of construction. Drivers can access nearby businesses throughout construction.
The primary detour routes while Bell Road is closed are Dysart, Greenway and Litchfield roads. Drivers should observe signs and speed limits and note that law enforcement officers are patrolling.
