ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1653, the city of New Amsterdam incorporated. It's now known as New York City, much to the relief of the New Amsterdam Yankees. Their name could barely fit on their hats! I just can't imagine Frank Sinatra singing "New Amsterdam, New Amsterdam."
In 1876, the very first baseball league was formed. 8 teams joined, but the game was so different then. For example, after the games, the team mom only brought treats... no drinks.
It was on this date back in 1880 that the first successful shipment of frozen mutton arrived in London from Australia. That, of course, inspired the Broadway song, "I got plenty of mutton."
It was on this date in 1893 that the very first movie close-up was filmed at the Edison studio in West Orange, NJ, as cameraman William Dickson photographed comedian Fred Ott sneezing. It also marked the first time that pepper was used as a prop.
On this date in 1912, Frederick R. Law jumped with a parachute from the torch of the Statue of Liberty in a stunt filmed by Pathe News. After that, the Statue started charging people admission on the way in, instead of the way out. What some people won't do to avoid taking the stairs.
In 1914, the Cub Scouts were formed. Up until that time, "Den Mother" was a derogatory term.
On this date in 1935, a lie detector was used for the very first time in Wisconsin. No one in town had told a lie until then. The witness finally had to admit that, "Yes, that dress actually does make you look fat! There! Are you happy?"
In 1971 that Idi Amin assumed power in Uganda. His first act was to execute his former singing partner, Steve.
