ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1541, Santiago, Chile, was founded. Which was a big relief to those who had been concerned about it being losted.

In 1554, Lady Jane Grey, who had been queen of England for all of nine days, was beheaded after being charged with treason. And you thought you had a tough boss. Or, and you thought your company retirement plan was lacking..

This is the actual birthday of Abraham Lincoln back in 1809. He was known as "Honest Abe" and it's pretty much an accepted fact that he was so honest, he never would have been able to do the news for CNN.

On this date in 1872 the toothpick was patented by Silas Noble and James P. Cooley of Massachusetts -- Here's a right-brain exercise: Arrange 5 toothpicks into the numeral 5. Then rearrange them into the number 16, without breaking any.

In 1878, the toothpick-making machine was invented. It was by the same people who invented it, only it was a splinter group.

On this date in 1878, a patent was granted for a baseball catcher's mask to Bob "Broken Nose" McCloughsky.

In 1892, Lincoln's birthday was declared a national holiday. Yep, back in the old days, this would have been a day off.

TODAY IS

Fat Tuesday tomorrow. We're two days away from Valentine's Day.

This is Lincoln's birthday. There was a time when you got this day off and George Washington's birthday later in the month. Then they combined 'em. But that's this coming weekend!

Christina Ricci is 38 today, although it seems like she's been that old for a couple of decades. (Trivia: her parents divorced after she filmed Addams Family Values in 1993. She has not spoken with her father since.)

Josh Brolin turns the big 5-0 today. Don't know much about him, other than people are always confusing me for him.

Chynna Phillips also turns 50. You'd think if you were going to go all phonetic and spell your first name with a Y, why bother with two L's in Phillips? Just sayin'.

Arsenio Hall turns 62. I can't remember -- does he have a show on the air now or not? He comes, he goes...

Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers is 66. He had some solo hits on his own, but I don't remember the titles. "I keep forgettin'."

Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Russell turns 84 today. Met him once, signing copies of his book in a Costco. Nice guy.
