ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1790, the U.S. patent office opened up. I wonder who had the patent on that idea? We don't know, but at least they had a place to register it.
  • In 1849, the safety pin was invented by Walter Hunt in New York.
  • Finally, diapers no longer needed to be stapled on.
  • A very popular device until disposal diapers were invented.
  • Up until that time, diapers were glued on. It wasn't pretty.

On this date in 1866, the ASPCA -- the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals -- was established. In no time at all, they were going to the dogs... and cats...

In 1872, the very first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska. It inspired the song, "Tree's a Jolly Good Fellow" and the comedy, "Tree's Company!" Their motto was "Tree cheers for Arbor Day!"

On this date in 1912, the Titanic set sail on it's maiden voyage. If only we had bailout programs back then.
