ON THIS DAY

ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1793, President Washington held his first cabinet meeting.
  • Things went pretty smooth, except for a brief, heated exchange between the liquor cabinet and the China hutch.
  • It was decided later that he should stop having meetings with furniture and actually appoint people to help him.
  • They decided on a light oak for the office and white for the kitchen.
  • It was so crowded, that they decided to move future meetings from the cabinet to a conference room.

In 1836, Samuel Colt patented the revolver.
  • Of course, he's the inventor of that famous pistol, The Sam 45.
  • His rivals said what you'd expect: "Shoot!" and "Son of a gun!"

On this date in 1919, Oregon became the first state to tax gasoline (1 cent per gallon). So we can blame them for the idea.

On this date in 1940, a hockey game was televised for the very first time on WXBS/New York. At first, people were shocked -- then they realized the announcers were saying "Puck"... and Chicago Black Hawks. (Thanks "Modern Family" for that one.)
