Lane closures scheduled overnight tonight on I-19 near Ajo Way in Tucson
Motorists traveling on Interstate 19 in Tucson will encounter lane closures overnight tonight while the Arizona Department of Transportation sets up concrete construction barrier in the median near the Ajo Way traffic interchange.
The left lanes of both northbound and southbound I-19 will be closed to allow crews to set the barrier, which will buffer crews from traffic while they construct a temporary crossover that will be used during the project to replace the traffic interchange at State Route 86 (Ajo Way).
The restrictions will be in place from 9 p.m. Tuesday (May 10) until 5 a.m. Wednesday (May 11). No ramps will be affected by these restrictions.
The work is part of a $41 million improvement project to replace the existing partial cloverleaf interchange on Tucson’s southwest side with a modern single-point urban interchange. The project also includes widening Ajo Way between 16th Avenue and Holiday Isle Boulevard.
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
