ON THIS DAY
It was on this date back in 1607 that the English colony at Jamestown, Virginia, was settled. That's when local chief Iron Eagle uttered those famous words, "Eck clawka moo hacha," which translated means, "there goes the neighborhood."
On this date in 1846, the U.S. declared war on Mexico. They say we won, but to be honest, we can't tell which side won that one.
In 1918, the first Airmail stamps were sold. They didn't fly them there as to when your letters would arrive? It was up in the air.
On this date in 1940, Igor Sikorsky flew the first helicopter. Radio traffic reporters everywhere celebrated, as they would no longer have to thump on their chest while giving reports, pretending they were up in a chopper.
In 1958, Vice President Richard Nixon's limo was battered by rocks thrown by anti-U.S. demonstrators in Caracas, Venezuela. Why rocks? Because the boulders were too heavy and they didn't have any bricks.
