THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY AT WORK

If you want to be successful at work, watch your mouth. And we're not talking about swearing, although it's smart not to do that, too. You may not realize it, but what you say -- however innocuous it might be -- could actually be undermining your chances for a promotion. Ilya Pozin, the founder of the web design and marketing company Ciplex, wrote a column for LinkedIn identifying seven things you should never say at work, calling each of them "career kryptonite."

1. "That's not in my job description."
What you should do instead: Don't look lazy and unmotivated. If you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed by the amount of work you have received, schedule a time to talk to your manager about your role, responsibilities and expectations.

2. "It can't be done."
What you should do instead: Figure out alternative ways to accomplish what seems like an impossible job. Instead of seeing you as a quitter, your manager will see you as a forward-thinking problem solver.

3. "It's not my fault."
What you should do instead: Taking responsibility for your mistakes shows character and the ability to learn from errors. When you point the finger at someone else, you don't learn.

4. "This will just take a minute."
What you should do instead: Over-promising and Under-delivering will only get you in trouble. Offer an accurate assessment of how long a job will take so you don't shortchange yourself.

5. "I don't need any help."
What you should do instead: Teamwork is essential in today's corporate world and being able to work well with others is a sign of a leader.

6. "It's not fair."
What you should do instead: Mom said life wasn't fair, and she was right. That also applies to your job. Don't complain or whine. Look for a solution and present that.

7. "This is the way it's always been done."
What you should do instead: Successful businesses and employees are forward-thinking and don't rely on the way it's always been done. Show that you are adaptable and ready for the next big thing.
