Bridge construction requires more nighttime I-19 restrictions this week at Ajo Way

Motorists traveling on Interstate 19 in Tucson can expect continued nighttime restriction this week while the Arizona Department of Transportation continues work on a new overpass bridge at the junction with Ajo Way.

The following restrictions are scheduled for this week:
Northbound I-19 traffic will be detoured onto the southbound travel lanes overnight Monday(Aug. 29) from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 30).

Tuesday (Aug. 30) and Wednesday (Aug. 31), southbound I-19 traffic will be detoured onto the northbound travel lanes and the westbound Interstate 10 off-ramp to southbound I-19 will be closed from 8 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

On Wednesday (Aug. 31) and Thursday (Sept. 1), the southbound I-19 off-ramp to Irvington Road will be closed for paving from 9 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning.

No work will occur after noon on Friday (Sept. 2) to accommodate Labor Day weekend travel.

The work is part of a $40 million project to replace the existing traffic interchange at I-19 and Ajo Way (State Route 86) with a modern interchange that is more efficient and safer for motorists.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
