Test of Clifton floodgate requires brief US 191 closure Sept. 14
An annual drill to ensure the town of Clifton’s flood gate operates correctly will require closing US 191 to all vehicles, pedestrians and railroad activity for short period on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
Town officials will close the gate designed to protect Clifton from rising floodwaters from the San Francisco River at 10 a.m. Wednesday, blocking all access on US 191 and adjacent sidewalks and Arizona Eastern Railway tracks. The gate is located at the south entrance to the US 191 bridge over the San Francisco River at milepost 163 in downtown Clifton.
Arizona Eastern Railway serves the nearby Morenci mine.
Town officials expect the gate to be reopened by 10:20 a.m., allowing all traffic to continue.
