ON THIS DAY
The Indian emperor who built the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, was born on this date in 1592. His sidekick also became famous by always introducing the Shah with, "Here-e-e-e-e-e-e-'s Jahanny!"
In 1778, the colonists set explosives afloat on the Delaware River to destroy the British fleet, but not one exploded. The only bomb was the idea.
On this date in 1896, German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen first described X-rays. What's to describe -- they're invisible! He called them, "the ones between the W-rays and the Y-rays." After rays A through W were shown to have no medical value.
In 1905, Perrine announced the discovery of Jupiter's 7th satellite, Elara. I have as much of a chance to remember that as I would be recalling the name of Larry King's 4th wife.
On this date in 1914, Henry Ford announced a minimum wage of $5 an hour for an eight-hour day.
I'm proud to say here at (call letters) that we're almost up to that.
$5 an hour? Someone needs to tell our boss that it's gone up!
$5 for an 8-hour work day? Today, babysitters get paid more than that. Nowadays that won't even buy you a pizza.
Well, we get a buck more than that!
In 1948, the book "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" was published. Like it was some big secret. It was that year's winner of the golden "Duh" award. Sadly, it was only a two-minute read.
On this date in 1972, President Nixon signed a bill into law that committed America to a reusable space ship. He was tired of having to save all the empties and take 'em back to the recycling center.
In 2004, Pete Rose admitted he had bet on baseball back when he was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Up until now, the only way he could ever get into the Hall of Fame was to use the back door when the guard wasn't looking.
