SIGNS YOU'RE OBSESSED
Infatuation can strike anywhere. It could be your ex, or that guy you've been "just friends" with for years. Your new match on OkCupid. The cute girl from work. The hot barista who serves you coffee every morning. Or perhaps even a celebrity you have no hope of actually ever meeting. Whatever the case, if you catch yourself making any of these classic moves, your interest has gone too far.
Did I Mention?
Are you familiar with this little affliction? You know you've got it bad when every little detail makes you think of your obsession. As in, "You want to order pizza? Ohmigod, so-and-so loves pizza!" Mentionitis is a handy gauge of how over-the-top your obsession has become: The less direct the link between the subject of conversation and the subject of your beloved, the bigger your problem.
Forgotten Friends
Do you avoid making plans with your pals because you're hoping something might come through from your crush? Blow off a Wednesday night movie with friends because it interferes with your weekly "date" with Detective Stabler? No love - even if it's real, reciprocated and intense - can replace all that you get out of your social circle. Besides, you're going to need your pals to pick you up and get you back on track if this new love burns out. Incidentally, if your only current friends are the nice guys at the police station who keep picking you up for that pesky restraining order violation, it is definitely time to move on.
Green Eyes
As a general rule, people who aren't totally obsessed with someone are fairly indifferent when, say, the other person starts dating someone else. Or talks to that cute stranger at the party. Or is polite to the check-out girl. If just seeing your crush within an arm's length of someone else makes you see red, you're treading on "bunny boiler" territory.
Totally Over It, But...
Have you been guilty of uttering the phrase, "I'm totally over him/her, but..."? Would we still be talking about it - again! - if you were truly as "over it" as you claim? The hallmark of being over someone is a healthy dose of indifference. He just doesn't come up in casual conversation. She isn't the center of your social universe. Their blip is so small, it doesn't even show up on your radar screen.
But That's Crazy
Another sign your crush has left "totally harmless" territory is when you catch yourself doing things you'd never otherwise do. If it's something that would make you say "That's ridiculous" before - like sending a million texts, calling and hanging up, and, ahem, staking out the house - it's time to rein in your romantic fixation.
Interference
Crushes can be a very fun addition to your daily life. Having a little imaginary love affair with the cutie in the next cubicle can make going to work a little more enjoyable. Jonesing for your hot personal trainer can get your butt to the gym on Saturday mornings. But you do need to worry when your infatuation starts to make getting on with your everyday life more difficult.
