SR 189 Study public hearing on Jan. 31

Draft Environmental Assessment available for review Jan. 13 – Feb. 14, 2017

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is hosting a public hearing on the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed improvement project for the State Route 189 (locally known as Mariposa Road): International Border to Grand Avenue study, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

The public hearing will be held Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nogales High School Cafeteria, 1905 N. Apache Boulevard, Nogales, AZ 85621. A presentation will begin at 5:45 p.m. followed by a formal comment period for all members of the public.

The Draft EA is part of a federally required review process, governed by the National Environmental Policy Act, which provides the public with an opportunity to review and comment on the document, along with the recommended alternative. Comments on the Environmental Assessment will be accepted until Feb. 14, 2017, and may be provided at the public hearing, submitted via the ADOT website at www.azdot.gov/sr189, or mailed to 1655 W. Jackson St., Mail Drop 126F, Phoenix, AZ 85007.

The document is available for download and review at the ADOT website www.azdot.gov/sr189.

Printed copies of the report also are available at Nogales City Hall, 777 N. Grand Ave., and the Nogales-Santa Cruz Library, 518 N. Grand Ave.

The project will improve a 3.75-mile section of State Route 189 in Nogales and build a flyover ramp connecting SR 189 to northbound Interstate 19. It includes work between the Mariposa Port of Entry and Grand Avenue, including the interchange at I-19.

Other planned improvements include widening the ramp from southbound I-19 to SR 189, adding a raised median along SR 189 and improvements at intersections with Grand Avenue and Target Range Road.

For more information about this project, please call Paki Rico, ADOT senior community relations officer, at520.388.4233 or email prico@azdot.gov.
