ON THIS DAY

In 1782, George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart. The order is, "I'd like to order a Purple Heart, no cheese and fries."

On this date in 1789, the U.S. created the War Department. Up until that time, husbands referred to their wives as "Sweetheart" or "Darling."

In 1882, the famous feud between the Hatfield family of southern West Virginia and the McCoys of eastern Kentucky broke out. And a History Channel mini-series was born.

On this date in 1912, the Progressive Party nominated Theodore Roosevelt for president.

Who knew Teddy Roosevelt was Flo's great grandfather?
This was years before the goofy woman in the white dress with the big hair came along.
Pretty impressive: an insurance company having their own political party.
Who knew that there was a political party named after a soup? Oh, wait... that's Progresso. Never mind.
In 1918, Philadelphia hit its all-time high temperature record of 106 degrees. For a day, it became known as "the city of brotherly YES I KNOW IT'S HOT!"

On this date in 1929, Babe Ruth set a record for hitting a second grand slam home run as many games. He was driving more men home than a designated driver on nickel beer night.

The very first computer chess tournament was held on this date in 1970. It's great that we've developed machines to help relieve us of all that thinking. Boy, how geeky was THAT summer camp: computers AND chess!
