FOODS THAT MAY PREVENT WEIGHT GAIN

We all know which foods cause weight gain -- from luscious, sweet cakes to thick, juicy steaks. So while you occasionally indulge in fattening foods, here is a list of a dozen foods and food ingredients that may prevent weight gain and should be the staples of your daily diet, according to the Institute of Food Technologists.

1. Dairy protein
Diets high in protein, specifically dairy protein can have a satiating effect, helping you feel full longer. One study showed that women who supplemented their regular diet with an additional 20 grams of dairy protein at both breakfast and lunch over a three-week period lost two inches from their waist.

2. Rice protein
Rice protein not only helps recovery time after exercise, but also improves exercise performance.

3. Dietary fiber
Found in fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, dietary fiber helps you feel full longer so you'll eat less during the rest of the day.

4. Raisins
Hungry for a snack? Grab a box of raisins. They will fill you up fast and help you to eat less later.

5. Almonds
Snacking on almonds will reduce your hunger and desire to eat during non-meal times -- without affecting your body weight. Bonus: They're packed with vitamin E.

6. Korean pine nuts
Eating Korean pine nuts in the form of oil or other extracts causes the release of the satiety hormone cholecystokinin.

7. Potato protein extract
You'll feel full sooner and longer when you eat a weight management bar that has potato protein extract as one of the ingredients.

8. Saffron
Eat foods seasoned with saffron, such as paella or saffron rice, and you feel more full.

9. Conjugated linoleic acid
Derived from safflower oil, conjugated linoleic acid has been shown to decrease the amount of fats the body stores after eating, increase the rate of fat breakdown, increase the rate of fat metabolism and decrease the total number of fat cells.

10. Coffee bean extract
An ingredient developed from the decaffeinated green coffee bean may help increase the rate of fat release from fatty tissue.

11. Canola oil
Canola oils can lower abdominal fat when used in place of other selected oil blends in a heart-healthy diet for weight maintenance.

12. Polyphenols
Found in blueberries and green tea, polyphenols cause a prolonged spike in metabolism after exercise and often during sleep.
