ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1784, George Washington nicknamed New York "the Empire State"... by spray-painting it on a subway wall.
In 1804, Napoleon was crowned emperor of France in a glittering ceremony at the Cathedral of Norte Dame in Paris.
- It was the only coronation ceremony ever held in France that included a booster seat.
- The crowd started chanted "Debout! Debout!" which translated means "Stand up! Stand up!"
Charles Dickens gave the first reading of his mostly sold-out 5-month long American tour way, way back in 1867. Click here for a clip from "A Christmas Carol."
On this date in 1927, the very first Model A Ford was sold for $385. Now, if you're lucky, that's a payment. Forty years later, the owner sighed and said, "Shoot. I could have had a V-8"
In 1952, a live human birth was shown on TV for the very first time.
- Because the event was on TV, the doctor didn't charge for his services... not even a delivery fee.
- I could just hear the director: "OK, we need you to stop pushing... it's time for a commercial break!"
- It inspired the catch-phrase, "You did this to me!" Or, instead of cutting the cord, the doctor cut the cable.
On this date in 1957, the very first full-scale atomic electric power plant opened. Critics gave it glowing reviews.
Britney Spears turns 34 today. Doesn't it seem like she should be at least 50? I can't explain it, either.
Sarah Silverman turns 45 today. We don't what her plans are, but I'm pretty sure that watching Jimmy Kimmel isn't on the list.
Lucy Liu hits her 47th birthday today. These days, she's playing Watson on the Sherlock Holmes show, "Elementary." How that happened is the one mystery they haven't solved.
We'd like to wish NBC news reporter Stone Phillips a happy 61st birthday today. We're afraid if we don't, he'll do a "Dateline" on us.
Business of Popping Corn Day -- And why not? Popcorn eaters make better lovers, a recent study shows. They're three times more romantic at the movies than those who don't eat popcorn. And they're three times more likely to cry, according a study by Screen-visions Cinema Promotions.
National Fritters Day -- It's a good time to put down that cinnamon roll and have an apple fritter instead.
