ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1587, Virginia Dare was born. She was the very first baby born in America to the early settlers. Obviously, the idea caught on.

In 1812, the U.S.S. Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, defeated the British frigate Guerriere during the War of 1812. They didn't just defeat the ship, they defeated the whole frigate thing.

On this date in 1848, the New York Herald reported there was gold "in them thar hills" out in California.
They didn't mention anything about the drought, earthquakes and future smog.
A prospector summed up the situation when he said, "What a rush!" That, of course, led to the creation of the 49ers and Joe Montana. Wait, I think I'm getting my history mixed up.
Just think, if people had been a little quicker in their reactions, the San Francisco football team would be called "the 48-ers."

In 1856, condensed milk was patented, the day after the condensed cow was discovered. A farmer created that breed when he crossed one of his dairy cows with railroad tracks, seconds before the train arrived.

On this date in 1950, ABC began the tradition of showing cartoons on Saturday morning. Those were the days. Now when I wake up on Saturday, I watch a few minutes of depressing news and go back to bed. I felt much better when the worst thing that could happen was having a safe dropped on Wile E. Coyote.

In 1951, the owner of the St. Louis Browns, Bill Veeck, sent in Eddie Gaedel, a 3-foot, 7-inch midget, to pinch-hit in a game against Detroit. With a 1-1/2 inch strike zone, Gaedel walked in four pitches. Of course, with those little legs, it took him half an hour to reach first. They wanted to play defense and, of course, you know which position: short.

On this date in 1957, Jerry Lee Lewis performed "Whole Lotta Shakin'" on ABC-TV's "American Bandstand." Yep, too much caffeine.

In 1960 that the Soviet space ship Sputnik 5 carried 3 dogs into orbit. Some people will do anything to get out of walking their dogs. Naturally, the dogs had to circle the earth three times before they finally sat down.

On this date in 1984, the world record for crawling was set at 27 miles. That'll happen when you've had a few too many and you can't find your car keys. We believe that also set the world record for the worst hangover.

In 1993, the last episode of "Cheers" was on the air. No more Sam's, no more Norm's, no more Woody's... yes, that's when that problem began.
