ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1860, the very first silver mine in the U.S. was opened in Virginia City, Nevada. Not only was it expensive to build a mine out of silver, but it seemed to always need polishing.
It was on this date in 1909 that the SOS distress signal was first used by an American ship, the Arapahoe, off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
• Unfortunately, the Coast Guard messaged back, "You spelled sauce wrong."
• A rescue ship arrived but found out all they needed were some soapy steel wool pads for the frying pan.
In 1919, the Green Bay Packers were born.
• Up until that time, people didn't really have anywhere to wear their cheesehead hats.
• The event is chronicled in the movie, "A Cheesehead is Born."
• Wow, that was more than three Brett Favre retirements ago.
It was on this date in 1933 that a world record was set when the temperature reaches 136 degrees Fahrenheit at San Luis Potosi, Mexico. It was so hot, bread instantly turned to toast. Cows started giving evaporated milk. You know. Hot.
On this date in 1934, the first prisoners arrived at San Francisco's Alcatraz Prison. Imagine having the "Welcome Wagon" franchise in that neighborhood...
In 1951, a baseball game was broadcast in color for the very first time. Unfortunately, it was the day the guy with the color TV set was having problems... but he still enjoyed watching a game between the Boston Purple Sox and the Chicago Gray Sox.
