ON THIS DAY

The very first police force was formed on this date in 1658, in the area now known as New York City. Back then, since there weren't any subways yet, vandals had to write their graffiti on the side of horses.

On this date in 1851, Isaac Singer was granted a patent for the sewing machine.
He was a funny guy. Only 5 minutes at the patent office and he had them in stitches.
Boy, his wife was a lucky woman: He did all the sewing!
In an amazing coincidence, a guy named Isaac Sewing took out a patent the same exact for a singing machine.
When he presented the idea to the patent office, they said, "So what?" and he said, "Everything!"
He was little weak in the marketing department. The slogan he chose for his new invention was, "Sew?"

In 1856, the first U.S. patent for an accordion was issued to Anthony Fass, proving once again that no one is perfect. So, if you're looking for someone to blame, blame him!

On this date in 1865, Dr. Joseph Lister became the first surgeon to use disinfectant during surgery. Unfortunately, he gargled so loud, he woke up his patient!

It was on this date in 1877 that Thomas Edison invented the sound recording with his Edisonphone.
Probably for the better that his last name wasn't Princess.
Of course, he did it in a movie theater... but the good news: movies hadn't been invented yet.
He also invented the Edison-pod, the Edison-pad and hey, wait a minute!

On this date in 1898, Hawaii was annexed to the United States... after our Secretary of State sat through a five hour "time share" demonstration.
