ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1620, the Pilgrims left England on the Mayflower... for a three-hour tour, a three-hour tour...
It was just one day later that the phrase, "Are we there yet?" was born.
Their goal -- to arrive in time for Thanksgiving.
They had two choices -- the Mayflower or the Titanic. They went Mayflower.
They left on board the Mayflower. Unless I'm mistaken, along with the Pinta and Santa Maria. Oh, wait a minute...
On this date in 1844, the cornerstone was laid for the Statue of Liberty. Several years later, the statue arrived in pieces and was assembled on that site. While it was a gift from France, not a lot of people know that they got it at IKEA.
In 1858, the first transatlantic telegraph cable was completed. Up until that time, you had to be in England to call up the castle and ask if Prince Albert was in the can. On this date in 1861, the very first U.S. income tax was levied. It was a whopping 3%. This should be "National Bad Idea Day."
In 1914, the world's first traffic light went into operation in Cleveland, Ohio. It's had drivers seeing red... and green... and yellow. It would have been so much more effective on a street.
On this date in 1921, the very first radio baseball broadcast was heard on KDKA/Pittsburgh. The Pirates beat the Phillies, 8-5 and of course, back in those days, the games were broadcast in black and white. While fans enjoyed it, critics complained it was like listening to grass grow.
In 1954, 24 boxers were inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame. Several made speeches, but none of the boxers were brief.
