ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1784, George Washington nicknamed New York "the Empire State"... by spray-painting it on a subway wall.

In 1804, Napoleon was crowned emperor of France in a glittering ceremony at the Cathedral of Norte Dame in Paris.
Because he was so short, he was the only leader of France that ever ruled from a booster throne.
It was the only coronation ceremony ever held in France that included a booster seat.
The crowd started chanted "Debout! Debout!" which translated means "Stand up! Stand up!"

On this date in 1816, the very first savings bank in the U.S. opened as the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society. Pretty fancy name for a place that paid .005% interest.

Charles Dickens gave the first reading of his mostly sold-out 5-month long American tour way, way back in 1867.

On this date in 1927, the very first Model A Ford was sold for $385. Now, if you're lucky, that's a payment. Forty years later, the owner sighed and said, "Shoot. I could have had a V-8"

In 1952, a live human birth was shown on TV for the very first time.
Because the event was on TV, the doctor didn't charge for his services... not even a delivery fee.
I could just hear the director: "OK, we need you to stop pushing... it's time for a commercial break!"
It inspired the catch-phrase, "You did this to me!" Or, instead of cutting the cord, the doctor cut the cable.

On this date in 1957, the very first full-scale atomic electric power plant opened. Critics gave it glowing reviews.
