ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1566, Nostradamus died, just as he foretold. He hated being right. He predicted quite a few things 500 years ago.

In 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution saying "these United Colonies are, and of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States." They then all enjoyed a continental breakfast.

On this date in 1890, the Sherman Antitrust Act was enacted by Congress prohibiting industrial monopolies and sorry receivers like Crabtree. Whoops, had this too close to the sports page... That was the Richard Sherman act.

It was on this date in 1937 that Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared over the Pacific Ocean, while attempting to make the round-the-world flight at the equator. Ironically, their luggage went through to Pittsburgh.

On this date in 1959, Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" hit movie theaters. If you ever see it, you'd wonder "How?"

In 1976, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was not cruel and unusual punishment. Watching reruns of "My Mother, The Car," yes... but not the death penalty.

The movie "Airplane!" opened in movie theaters on this date back in 1980. That was back when it was okay to call you, Shirley.

On this date in 1992, Mick Jagger became a grandfather for the very first time. So, doing the math, his oldest grandchild turns 26 today.

TODAY IS

Lindsay Lohan somehow made it to her 32th birthday today. Yeah, I can't explain it, either. So pay up. Even Herbie the Love Bug doesn't like her.

Singer Michelle Branch is 35. Nice that her parents didn't name her Library or Tree. I knew someone with the last name of Branch once. I wonder which branch of the Branch family she's from?

Former baseball player Jose Conseco turns 54 today. He was known for doing steroids and and at one time Madonna. I don't know what the heck he was thinking. Or, for that matter, why he did the steroids!

Jerry Hall, Mick Jagger's one time lover, turns 62 today.

Larry David -- blame him for Seinfeld -- turns 71 today. Happy yadda-yadda to you.

Racing legend Richard Petty celebrates birthday #81 today. Interesting how he made the petty things stand out. I'm reminded of the old phrase, "It's better to have sweat the petty things than pet the sweaty things."

Polly Holiday, who played Flo on the old TV series "Alice" and popularized the phrase, "Kiss my grits," turns 81 today. Now, she just eats them.
