ON THIS DAY
ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1783, the self-winding watch was invented.
- By the laziest man in the world.
- The inventor came up with the idea one day when he asked his wife to wind the clock and she replied, "Wind it yourself!"
- It used to be that kids were shocked to find out there was a time you had to wind a watch. These days, they say, "What's a watch?"
John Griffiths was born on this date in 1809. He was credited with developing the Clipper ship. He was also the first Clipper shipper.
On this date in 1863, Dr. Charles H. Sheppard opened the first public bath in Brooklyn, NY. Of all the places I'd like to take a bath in public, Brooklyn isn't one of them. Suddenly, "Can you get that spot on my back?" became the new catch-phrase.
In 1889 The Moulin Rouge opened it's doors for the very first time. Frankly, we had no idea Nicole Kidman was so old.
On this date in 1889, Thomas Edison showed his very first motion picture. It was the best time to do it, because remember, at that time, there were no movie reviewers. Unfortunately, what most people remember from that day is that popcorn was $5 a tub. Needless to say, being the only motion picture it was the odds-on favorite to win the Oscar.
On this date in 1992, a Texas Billionaire named Ross Perot bought a half-hour of prime-time TV and asked Americans to support him in a bid to be president. For a night, Americans were all ears.
