GETTING CULTURE DOWNTOWN

When your wife says, "Honey, let's go see that musical at the theater downtown," what do you do? If you go to it enthusiastically, chances are you're not only happier and healthier, but also enjoy life more than the guy who moans and groans about cultural events and instead stays home to watch the game on TV. Led by Koenraad Cuypers, a research fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the study of 50,000 Norwegians concluded that men who enjoy going to concerts, art galleries and the theater have more satisfaction in life than those who don't. Compared with men who don't do this, men who attend cultural events either as a viewer or participant are:
  • 9% more likely to report being in good health.
  • 14% more likely to say they were satisfied with life.
  • 13% less likely to have anxiety.
  • 12% less likely to be depressed.
91% of those who participated in five or more cultural activities over six months said they were somewhat to very satisfied with life, compared with 84% who felt that way but only took part in one activity.
