ON THIS DAY

ON THIS DAY
On this date in 1066, William The Conqueror invaded England. You already know by his name how the invasion went. Otherwise he would be known as William It Didn't Quite Go As Planned.
In 1850, flogging was abolished as an official form of punishment in the U.S. Navy.
  • Some day, I hope our company will adopt that standard.
  • As our boss reminds us often, this isn't the Navy.
  • How many years have we been asking for that ban? Every time we ask, they flog us!
  • That was the inspiration for the old cliche, "If you can't beat 'em, don't!"

On this date in 1892, the first night-time football game was played. It was great: since there were no lights, you could just pretend it was your team that was ahead.

In 1920, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in what has become known as the "Black Sox" scandal. Can you believe that? They actually played the World Series in September?
