UPDATE: Weekend ramp closures scheduled at I-19 and Ajo Way in Tucson in August

Motorists traveling on Interstate 19 in Tucson can expect ramp closures at Ajo Way the first weekend in August.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has revised the order in which ramps will be closed fromSaturday (Aug. 6) until early Monday (Aug. 8) for installation of a city of Tucson water line.

Work to install a city of Tucson water line will require closure of the southbound off-ramp from I-19 onto Ajo Way from 5 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 6) until midnight. During this restriction, southbound I-19 traffic can continue to Irvington Road and use local streets to return to Ajo Way.

Continued work to install the 12-inch water line will require the on-ramp from Ajo Way to southbound I-19 to be closed from early morning Sunday (Aug. 7) until 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 8). During this restriction, Ajo Way traffic can use local streets to enter southbound I-19 at Irvington Road.

The work is part of a $41 million project to replace the traffic interchange at I-19 and Ajo Way (State Route 86) and make improvements to Ajo Way and the interstate.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
