ON THIS DAY

In 1265, England's Parliament meets for the first time. The first order of business -- coming up with a better name than "parliament."

On this date in 1892, the very first basketball game was played. Back then, they used peach baskets to shoot at.
  • This is the one where they worked out the bugs -- for example, before starting the game, always remove the peaches from the peach baskets.
  • After an hour, with the score still nothing to nothing, they took the cover off of the basket and the action picked up.
  • The rules of the game were still being figured out and it was decided in the second game, they wouldn't allow guns.
  • The team won 110-0. It was determined that the game would have been more interesting if the team had an opponent.

In 1929, Wayne Baxter won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Actor, for his role in the movie, "Old Arizona"... which, even back then, was John McCain's nickname. If Spike Lee had been alive back then, he definitely would have boycotted that year.

On this date in 1961, John F. Kennedy was inaugurated President and uttered those famous words, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Of course, country music wasn't as popular as it is now.

In 1965, the Wisconsin Cheese Foundation started making "the world's largest cheese": a block weighing 34,591 pounds. When the work was finally completed, the celebration was short-lived, when the cheese was attacked by a 32-ton mouse.

On this date in 1985, the cold temperatures hitting the east coast were so intense that President Reagan had to be sworn-in INSIDE. The first time that ever happened. This only proved the democrats right when they said it would be a cold day before President Reagan was elected for a second term.

In 1988, the Rockwell B-1 bomber was delivered to the U.S. Air Force. When they announced it was the B-1, the Air Force yelled out, "Bingo!"

Singer Edwin McCain turns 46 today. He had a hit years ago called, "I'll Be." Ironically, a guy named Al B had a hit with a song called "Edwin McCain."

Rainn Wilson (The Office) hits the big 5-0 today. With a first name like that, you know he was born in Seattle.

Bill Maher celebrates a birthday today. Because it would be politically incorrect to point out which one, he's 60.
  • He's spent his entire life being politically incorrect.
  • Bill is about as PC as Apple.
  • I know saying an older person's name isn't politically correct, but neither is he.

Director David Lynch turns 70. He gave us "Twin Peaks"... and we gave it back.

Arte Johnson from "Laugh In" turns 82 today. Remember when he played the dirty old man in the park? He's living it now.

It’s National Cheese Lovers Day, So dam it! Smile!

Miley Cyrus was photographed moving back into Liam Hemsworth's home. Let the pools begin!

In Padua, Italy, a woman called in the fire department after she lost the key to her chastity belt.

Remember when having the key to her heart was enough?

The tool they used to free her? The Jaws of Whoo-Hoo!!!

It looks like there will NOT be a reboot of the TV show "Saved by the Bell." Once again, prayer works.

For Desert Radio AZ, I'm Crusty Windbreaker
